I Have A Dream

This morning has involved copious amounts of black coffee and the best batch of scrambled eggs I have ever made…and planning. Planning, dreaming and list making is a big deal in my family. For some reason it helps propel your dreams into actions and your ambition into tangible plans if you discuss them out loud and make a road map, as it were, on how to get to your big lifetime achievement goal.

I had a book when I was younger, called Beautiful Girlhood, and it talked about the importance of making your “dreams” and goals the highest that you could possibly imagine. Don’t listen to anyone tell you that if you don’t reach your lofty dreams you’ll be disappointed. If you shoot for the moon and fail, you’ll still land in the stars.

Do you secretly dream of being the first woman to win the NFR team roping? Write it down. Right now. Decide what it is that you have to do to make that dream a reality. Make lots of little goals that will make it possible for you to achieve the bigger goals, which will make it possible for you to be the first woman to win the NFR in the team roping. Are you out there roping every day? Are you eating right so your body will be in the best preforming shape possible? Are you constantly working on becoming a better horseman to help your partner out in all this, your horse?

Do you want to become the best saddle maker out there? Awesome. Write it down right now. What do you have to do to make that dream a reality? Are you riding every day so that you understand what is expected from your saddles? Are you working with leather, taking old saddles apart, going to saddle making clinics? Are you teaching yourself how your tree affects your end product, the saddle?

Adrian and I have been doing some big planning and dreaming right now. It’s important to frequently reevaluate what your goals are in life, where your life is going and if the path you are on at this exact moment is actively helping you achieve those goals.

Right now we’re doing all the, nitty-gritty, hard work that is involved in getting our dreams lined out so we can turn them into a reality. And that means that we have to give up some fun things in order to achieve the ultimate goals. I mentioned last month how I had forgotten to make myself some smaller goals as I’m getting healthier and trying to recover from Lyme disease. Right now, my two big goals are to get to a place where I can start showing my horse Albert, and to start shoeing again. In order to show Albert I have to ride him every day, whether I feel good or not. That means I have to give up eating certain foods that taste good to me, but ultimately make me feel more sick. In order for me to start shoeing again with confidence, I’ve decided that I have to get a little healthier, a little stronger, and then go to shoeing school. In order to get healthier and stronger, I’m going to need to keep eating right, exercising and riding my horses. In order to attend the shoeing school, I’m going to need to start saving now!

I don’t care how big or impossible your dream feels right now. Write it down. Work at it. And make it happen. I’m struggling right there along with you…you CAN do this!

  1. Liz, totally agree with you 100%. I'm the same obsessive list maker. I've got goals...big goals...and I plan on achieving each and every one. Goal setting and planning is a big step in getting there. I think most people undervalue the importance of planning but if done right anything is possible. Yes, we may have to make sacrifices in the process but in the end it will all be worth it when we achieve the dreams we set out to accomplish!

  3. The book The Power of Now by Eckart Tolle (sp?) is like my bible...it tells you to figure out what you want and take the steps to get it done...just like this post. Looking forward to reading your blog
