Shoo-flys and Shot Guns

Ham and eggs are frying in the cast iron pan, and biscuits are baking in the oven.

Storm clouds moved in over the home place this afternoon making the heat and sweat of this morning seem a long time ago.

Horses rode, watered, fed and put up for the night.  Some fence fixed and plans for a better arena and pens paced off.

Dogs litter the wood floors and watch with glittering eyes as scrap pieces of rawhide fall to the ground as string is pulled through a cutter.

Town clothes washed, ironed and reluctantly packed in preparation for the coming weekend’s travels and adventures.

Laughing at the new batch of pictures of friend’s brandings and hoping that maybe next weekend we’ll be home to attend at least one neighbor’s branding.

A fire built, just to take the chill of the evening’s storm off and Psalm 1 is quietly whispered over and over as sleep comes stealing in the window…
