Who Is Buckaroo Barbie And What Does It Mean???

Welcome to Buckaroo Barbie!!

We've gotten so many new subscribers and followers the last little while that we felt that an introduction was in order!

We are the Brannan Sisters.

We are best friends, sisters, adventurers, business partners, cowboy-girls, artists, writers, entrepreneurs and oh…so much more.

Liz braids rawhide, used to cowboy for the Van Norman Ranch in Northeastern NV, and is now a freelance writer (read a recent article in The Indie Chicks HERE). She also has a major addiction to high-heels and red lipstick. Adrian quills traditional Native American flatwork, officially retired from riding ranch broncs in the spring of 2012 and is a western/folk singer with 3 albums to her name. She also has a major vintage clothing fetish and is rarely seen without false eyelashes.

Being a Buckaroo Barbie is about becoming all that you can be, taking charge of your life and chasing down your dreams and making them come true. Adrian became a recording artist with a full career at the age of 14. Liz cowboyed for a ranch that had never hired a woman outside of family before. Our dreams came true and we’re watching other dreams we have coming true, thanks to our Buckaroo Barbie outlook on life. We believe in the power of positive thinking, in setting goals and in working your cute little ass off. We believe in you and think that part of being a Buckaroo Barbie is helping others others reach their full potential.

Buckaroo Barbies are an intriguing mixture of tough and soft, strength and grace, cowboy and fashionista. They are known to wear boots with their pearls, but they also know that the most beautiful attribute any woman can have is the beauty and class of her heart and soul. Buckaroo Barbies love to be outside, their animals and wide open spaces. A Buckaroo Barbie also loves being a girl. She enjoys fashion and beauty and the finer things in life…be they good food, fine wine or cars and trucks.

She’s part wild-child and part good-girl….she is Buckaroo Barbie!

A Recap of 2013 With Buckaroo Barbie

I was NOT going to do one of these uplifting, humorous, "end of the year recaps" because everyone else does them. But then I realized that the reason we do them is because they are uplifting and inspiring and that's just what we all need as we march smartly into the new year!

So.

I hope this year is your best year yet. I hope that instead of seeing the negative you search for the good. And most of all, I hope you focus on the things that set you apart, the weirdness that makes you YOU and that you embrace it whole heartedly. Thank you for following along with us, it means the world!

A Time For Thanksgiving

This night, I am thankful for the pain I thought would tear us down this year,
Because it ultimately made us stronger.

This night, I am thankful for the tears that ruined our mascara,
Because it made our smiles that much more beautiful.

This night, I am thankful for the tender moments we spent with loved ones,
Because it taught us what love should feel like.

This night, I am thankful for our triumphs,
Because they gave us confidence to ask for more.

This night, I am thankful for my life and all I have been given,
Because.

Just because.

My Favorite Moments From Elko 2013

This year was the 29th Elko Poetry Gathering and these are my favorite moments that happened during the week.

  • Adrian lighting candles, spraying perfume, opening all the doors and windows to our hotel room while I chain smoked to try and mask the smell of pee. Why would anyone urinate on a radiator? You can't clean behind it and when that's the heat source in the room, it's a little rank!!
  • Spending an inordinate amount of money. I'm not going to lie, that was fun. It probably won't be as much fun when I balance my check book though.
  • Buying my first Timmy Lynn levi quilt. I've been wanting one of those since I was 19...COOL!
  • Visiting loudly, joyfully and did we mention noisily, with our friends the Goemmers. Adrian and my's personalities are so similar to Reata and Dally's and it's kind of funny to see how there's an outgoing, louder sister and a little more reserved sister in each family. And there's something about getting to be around Mindy that makes my loudness come out full force...and I LOVE it!
  • Seeing our Italian friends here on American soil. Drinking, hand gesticulating and eating gone wild. For some reason when I get around Drew and Nat I start talking English with an Italian accent. Why, I'll never know.
  • Catching up and spending some quality giggle time with Jennifer Dennison. Every blonde needs a redhead friend! :)
  • The Young Guns Show that Andy Hedges, Adrian and Brenn Hill did on Thursday night was amazing. I don't even know how to explain to you the pride and emotion (sorry, I'm being a girl), I have when my sister dedicates a song to me from stage. And when friends that we know take time off and pay their hard-earned money to come listen to Adrian, just makes me about want to bust.
  • Adrian getting locked out of her own show by an over zealous volunteer and then being asked to leave said show after finally being admitted for visiting too loudly with some fans when she was signing CDs...that actually made me so incredibly angry I thought I might fling an unlucky old lady through a window and down a snow covered hill, but I managed to control myself. Looking back on it, it was kind of funny though. I'm sorry miss, but with the name tag that says performer and that guitar in your hand at a guitar playing/cowboy singing festival, you look awfully suspicious. I'm going to have to ask you to leave!!! hehehehehe
  • I had never attended the artist breakfast in the past, but this year I went. We visited and laughed and joked and made a new friend in George Elsner. What a lovely man! I put a down on a set of spurs that he had with him....I'm so excited and can't wait to show them to you all! He is an amazing bit and spur maker whose snaffle bits and other gear are gladly used by the working cowboy/cowboy-girls in the area. He instantly knew that I needed a pair of spurs with a shorter shank because my legs are so long, and I love that he didn't try and talk me into the set with the drop shanks. I can't wait to get my greedy little paws on them!
  • Running into a couple who had been at a show of Adrian's and asked her if she really thought there were working cowboys and ranchers at her show.
  • One of my favorite things that happened this year, we actually missed by a margin of almost 10 minutes. We were at the Stray Dog listening to Mike Beck sing and play and left earlier than our friends to catch some zzzzz's before the next day of shows. Mike and the Goemmer's left the bar to find a homeless man rough housing a blonde lady up in attempt to steal her little dog. Mike and Sean of course jumped in, whereupon Mike got punched in the face and Sean wanted to hog tie the homeless man with the dog's lead. Everyone ended up being OK, but I would have payed SO much money to watch that little scene unfold.
  • Listening to Jessica Hedges, Adrian, Kathy Wines and Amy Auker talk during the youth meeting about the future of the Elko Poetry Gathering. They were eloquent, they were passionate and they all had very different but applicable ideas to put into affect. They also all come from a ranching/cowboying background, so I felt like what they had to say came from a position that desperately needs to be heard in the management tiers of Elko.
  • Getting up Sunday morning and picking up my best friend to have a cup of coffee. She's an ER nurse and works nights, so her just coming off her night shift and staying up to visit was wonderful. Her dad worked for the ranch MY dad worked for when I was 6, and we moved into the house that the Souza's moved out of, missing each other by a mere week. One of the first times I met Stephanie was at Jordan Valley Big Loop Rodeo when we were still teenagers. It was late into the evening's festivities and we were with a group of people where all the girls had showered, changed and done their hair. I think Steph and I knew we were going to be best friends from the moment we saw each other because we were both wearing old boots, hoodies and straight legged jeans....true kindred spirits. Getting to catch up face to face and realize we're friends for a reason....priceless.
  • Being sick in a hotelroom that reeked of urine, Adrian and I laying in the same bed and watching the latest installment of the Twilight movies. And we liked it. The movie, not the smell. Don't judge.
  • Making it home to the joyful and welcoming greetings of dogs, parents, cats and horses and feeling invigorated and inspired by the people and the stories we brushed up against while in Elko. Till next time!
Jennifer Dennison, Adrian, me and Natalia Estrada
Note the look of nervous happiness since I just realized how much money I had spent that afternoon.

Adrian, me and Jessica Hedges right after the youth meeting. Note the happy looking man in the background...my friend Stephanie actually treated him in the ER a day later! WEIRD!

Snow Drifts and Pican Punches

I'm sitting here in our hotel room, feet up, listening to Ryan Bingham and watching Adrian hang up her show clothes. We're in Elko for the 29th National Cowboy Poetry Gathering and I keep offering encouraging pieces of advice like, "Well, yeah, that scarf is cute but it looks kind of like Easter." I'm helpful like that!!!

I'm exhausted and Adrian hasn't even started working yet! But a good kind of tired...like heart is happy, feet are sore, cheeks hurt from smiling genuine, happy smiles kind of tired! We somehow managed to get here several hours ahead of our self-imposed schedule last night and since we were starving (who are we kidding, we're always starving!), we stomped off to Bil Tolki's for some chow! And ended up staying in the early hours of the morning drinking, laughing and visiting with old friends. Remember when we went to Italy last spring and had so much fun with Drew and Nat?? Well they're here and we had a fantastic reunion. All the Italian I've been practicing since then flew right out of my head the moment I wanted to actually use it, but what can you do? Such is life. Jennifer Dennison was there as well (she's the lovely lady from Western Horseman), and I'm pretty sure that we laughed ourselves silly last night. The pican punch probably helped some too :)

I've been spending money like I'm a wealthy playboy from....um, I don't know....somewhere rich playboys come from...and I'm enjoying every second of it!! I finally broke down and bought a quilt from Timmy Lynn and I'm not going to lie to you, it felt good.

We went to another trade show and got to visiting with some other friends, felt the familiar twinge of hunger and realized that 3 hours had literally passed and I don't think we ever stopped talking once. WOW.

There's an artist breakfast first thing in the morning that I've never gone to with Adrian before that promises to be loud and funny because...well Adrian and Mindy and I will be there talking at the same time! But don't worry, if you don't think we're funny it's OK, cuz we're definitely amused by ourselves!!! :D

I have a math exam as soon as we get home so if you see a blonde girl sitting in Cowboy Joe's tomorrow afternoon, crying and screaming incoherently at her calculator...don't worry. It's just me. Please come say hi and save me from myself. And my math. :) I promise I won't bite.

Quote of the Week

"I hope that in this year to come, you make mistakes.

Because if you are making mistakes, then you are making new things, trying new things, learning, living, pushing yourself, changing yourself, changing your world. You’re doing things you’ve never done before, and more importantly, you’re Doing Something.

So that’s my wish for you, and all of us, and my wish for myself.
Make New Mistakes.
Make glorious, amazing mistakes.
Make mistakes nobody’s ever made before.
Don’t freeze, don’t stop, don’t worry that it isn’t good enough, or it isn’t perfect, whatever it is: art, or love, or work or family or life.

Whatever it is you’re scared of doing,
Do it.

Make your mistakes, next year and forever.”

-Neil Gaiman

I Am Thankful

I got a twitter account last month (you can follow me HERE!) and I got the idea of a blog post thanks to a friend on there, Cassi, who also takes rockin photographs. A week or so ago she mentioned that she was taking the time to write down 20 things that she is grateful for in her life and how eye opening it was. I thought this was an extra special idea right before the New Year.  It inspired me to do the same, but I couldn't stop so here is my list of 25 things I am thankful for right now, in no particular order. What are you thankful for?

1.     I am thankful for the time to spend with friends that we don’t normally see very often.
2.     I am thankful I get to work, travel and play with my best friend and little sister, Adrian.
3.     I am thankful for warm socks.
4.     I am thankful for my darling little Roo dog who brings so much joy into my life.
5.     I am thankful for the relationship I have with my parents….they’re just so COOL!
6.     I am thankful for silk Pajamas.
7.     I am thankful for coffee.
8.     I am thankful for every single person that takes the time to read and comment on Buckaroo Barbie.
9.     I am thankful for the ability and luxury to reinvent myself: I used to be a cowboy, now I’m a writer/personal assistant and the possibilities for the future are endless.
10. I am thankful for my sister’s Frye boots that she lets me wear (I know that’s shallow but I can’t help it, I LOVE THEM!).
11. I am thankful for the stack of lovely, inspiring and thoughtful books I received for Christmas. Books can mold you, shape you and push you in directions you never thought of going.
12. I am thankful for second chances in life.
13. I am thankful for my big, fat old Albert horse who doesn’t buck me off even when it’s cold outside and he hasn’t been ridden in forever.
14. I am thankful for the people who take the time to tell my sister how her music has moved them and why.
15. I am thankful that I have finally discovered a healthy way to eat that makes me feel TERRRIFIC!!!
16. I am thankful for family: blood and chosen.
17. I am thankful for the chances I have been given, with my horses, rawhide, writing and education.
18. I am thankful for makeup, because it makes me feel like a girl.
19. I am thankful for the friends I have made while traveling and the technology that allows me to stay in touch with them.
20. I am thankful for music, it moves me in ways I don’t even understand!
21. I am thankful for old black and white movies, they inspire me.
22. I am thankful for chocolate. Don’t judge.
23. I am thankful for my memories, they keep my heart warm during the hard spells.
24. I am thankful that some hard-working cowboy has to work in the snow today and I don’t! hehehehe
25. I am thankful for the opportunity to be given this life to live and the ability to make it into something big and glittering with possibility and joy.

9 Things I learned This Year

I’ve been reflecting on this past year, and thinking about the lessons I’ve learned throughout 2012. Some were easier to learn and others were a little more difficult. Here are my life lessons, what did you learn this year??

If You Surround Yourself With Positive, Creative, Hard Working People, You Are Inspired To Be A More Positive, Creative And Hard Working Person Yourself.
It feels like this year Adrian and I had the privilege to meet more and more creative, hard working and positive people. I want to be wildly successful (there, I said it “out loud!” Announcing what you want to the cyber world at large is always interesting!), and from what I can observe, in order to succeed you must surround yourself with like-minded people.

Until You Decide To Get Healthy And Loose Weight, You’re Not Going To Loose Any Weight.
I was always one of those people who was naturally thin. As a child, my paternal grandmother used to try and make me eat fat because she felt I was too skinny! I never had any problems loosing weight if I wanted to and it didn’t seem to matter what I ate, I stayed skinny. And then I turned 23 and went through some weird hormonal imbalance where the side affect was horrible acne and weight gain. Like 40 pounds of weight gain. Not cool at all, I kind of freaked out. According to my family, and I hate to admit it but they were right, I resembled a refrigerator, which is never a good thing. And then I discovered what everyone else had been bitching about all this time. It was hard to loose weight. This September, I made a conscious decision to get back to where I had been before I went through that weird imbalance (140lbs) and made a beginning goal to run 1 mile at a time, 3 days a week. Then I upped it to 2 and now my goal is 3 miles. I’m back to my “cowboy days” weight and I want to loose some more….anyone have any good tips?? I saw the best card the other day, it said summer bodies are made in the winter. I’m inspired to work my butt off this winter to have the healthiest, strongest body I’ve ever had for summer 2013! And this makes me think that this approach and mindset can be transferred to other areas of my life.

Practicing Every Day Will Radically Change You In Many Different Ways.
I started practicing the piano again. My mums signed Adrian and I up for classical piano lessons when we moved to Scotland (I was 8 and Adrian was 4), and I played until I was about 15 years old. For some reason I decided to stop in high school and when I was cowboying I of course did not travel with a baby-grand, so no practicing then either. This summer I decided to start playing again and when we were home, practice an hour a day. I felt so….OFF and rusty at first!! My fingers felt stiff, I was incredibly nervous for even my mums to hear me practice and I was frequently frustrated. But I kept with it and a change happened. I didn’t just get a little bit better, I got a LOT better. And it keeps building. I’ve also seen this with my writing. For the last several months I’ve been posting almost every day. The discipline to sit down, write about something that personally means something to me, edit it, get someone else to edit it for me and then post it has really stretched me as a writer. Adrian and I have a copy of Buckaroo Barbie that I was rereading the other day and I was amazed at how far I’ve come AS a writer, just in the last 6 weeks. Practice makes perfect, and good practice every day makes excellent. I want to be excellent, don’t you?!?!

Standing Up For You Is Liberating. Don’t Allow People Who Are Consistently Mean To You And Enjoy Bringing You Down To Be A Part Of Your Life.
Without going into a lot of sordid detail, I kicked someone out of my life this year that’s been a part of it for a while now. I let that person get away with a lot of flack that I shouldn’t have. I always made excuses for their behavior in the past and probably would have continued to, except that they crossed a line when they moved on to my sister. You might have noticed that I’m rather fond of that girl, and that’s what brought me up short in my tracks. The feeling is amazing. I don’t want to bad mouth or be negative to anyone, but I don’t worry or wonder what’s going to happen between us now. The little jabs and constant undermining aren’t a part of my life anymore, and you know what? It feels pretty darn good!! Don’t allow someone to be a part of your life if they’ve consistently shown they aren’t there because they love you. Don’t make a big deal out of it, just remove yourself from the situation and move on. It feels good.

When You Find Your Groove, Stick To It!
I cut out gluten from my diet this year and most of my Lyme symptoms have “magically” disappeared! Thanks to my diet and exercise I am able to travel with Adrian, handle business details and remain healthy and functioning through a lot of stress!! I tried a piece of my mums apple cake (see picture HERE) on Christmas day, and almost immediately I started feeling bad. My hips and knee joints hurt, I felt “shaky” and I had to take a nap. It wasn’t fun to feel sick again, but it was a good reinforcement to stick with the diet and exercise I had been for my optimum health.  No more gluten for me!

Learning To Effectively Communicate With People Is The Best Business Skill You Can Learn.
I’m not talking about communicating your deepest needs and feelings to people, but being able to effectively communicate, calmly and succinctly, in times of stress. If you can remain calm and logical under attack and respond in a manner that’s not going to inflame your opponent further, you have a skill that will help you succeed in life. My dad is the best negotiator I’ve ever met, and I use him as a model for how I want to be able to better communicate with people in my life.

In Order To Be Your Personal Best, Discover Your Baseline Essentials.
Every body has some basic essentials that they need in order to function. Mine are: clean, organic food, exercise, water, coffee and pen and paper. If I have these 5 basic essentials, I can survive and it brings about optimum results in all aspects of my life. For a while I tried to get by without my basic needs because I thought it was silly that I would require such specific things, but I just don’t get along as well without them as I do with them! And I want to be the best I can be in all aspects of my life, so if having good food, exercise, water, coffee and a means to write helps me be that excellent version of me, then I’m gonna make sure they’re in my life!! What are your essentials?

When You Think You’re Going To Break, You Learn That You Can Still Bend.
Our family went through some hard times this year, and I honestly got to a place where I felt like I wasn’t going to be able to handle one more thing. You get to a certain point and you feel like the only possible outcome is for your heart, soul and body to shatter from stress and pain. And the shocking thing is, it doesn’t. I discovered that right when I thought I couldn’t handle any more and the stress was too much, I didn’t break, I could bend. When we are faced with no other options we draw on reserves we didn't know we had. Many times, we are stronger than we ever would have realized unless we went through the bad times. Which led me right into my last lesson…

From Discomfort Comes Change.
When I’m really, really uncomfortable, that’s when I’m changing. If I’m exercising and my body hurts or it feels impossible to breath, that’s when fat is burning and my heart is getting stronger. When I’m uncomfortable in a business or family situation because I don’t have the proper tools or experiences, that discomfort eventually brings about change for the better. You either sink or swim and for me, sinking is just not an option. I’m learning to take my moments of being awkward, frightened, uncomfortable and embarrassed and using them to my advantage. I’m learning to look at them as learning experiences and allow them to show me where I’m lacking and where I can improve in life; be it in my exercise, business or becoming a better communicater with my family. Discomfort brings about change. And change is a good thing. We can’t succeed or grow in life if we’re stagnant…and we want to grow!!!

I’m looking forward to going through my goals from 2012 and seeing how I’ve grown and where I fell short. I’m going to approach 2013 from the viewpoint that this is going to be my best year yet and I’m going to work my butt off to make it that way. I hope you do the same and don’t let the trials and the road bumps (for some of us they may be more like mountains than road bumps), slow you down or discourage you. March or twirl or dance or ride smartly into 2013 with the best attitude you’ve got and experience under your belt from the lessons you learned in 2012…go out there and show ‘em how it’s done! I believe in you!!
