8 Rules To Be Successful In Anything

Maybe it’s the caveman in us, but when we humans start a new hobby or career and don’t see some sort of success right away, we get really frustrated. Whether you are an aspiring hairstylist, an up and coming reining cow horse trainer or a cowboy, by following these 8 guidelines you really won't be able to NOT succeed.

1.     Show up early and be the last to leave.
2.     Learn to accept constructive criticism.
3.     Be kinder than is necessary.
4.     Be persistent.
5.     Utilize your mentors.
6.     Set goals.
7.     Don’t complain.
8.     Realize that you will fail, but that it is an opportunity for you to try again,
just more wisely this time.

Wanting to be the best is not something to be ashamed of and hidden away in the dark corners of our heart. We are CALLED to be our best, to sacrifice until we have achieved greatness, if for no other reason than to be able to light the way for someone else.

Any fool can limp along and just get by. But you? You should thirst, hunger, and seek after greatness, no matter what form that greatness takes, until success is yours.

You Should Be Obsessed With Becoming The Best

Ok sister. It’s time for some tough love. We all need it at one time or another and I think it’s about time we got around to it today.

We need to toughen the heck up. Yup. You heard me. Physically, spiritually, and socially, it’s time for us to toughen up.

Too often I am content with cruising along because it’s not as painful as busting my skinny jean clad butt. I’m traveling down my lane in life and I feel like it’s going pretty well, I’m checking off goals right and left and then out of no where, a big old stink pile of life hits me right upside the face. And I’m left shivering, confused and more than just a tad dazed. I mentioned a few weeks ago that I had been having a rough couple of weeks but that we have to take the opportunities provided to us in life before they’re completely gone. Well not only do we need to devour every opportunity like a fat kid eating funnel cake, we need to stay uncomfortable.

Jesus and Mimosas

After a little come to Jesus meeting with my parents over a Sunday brunch and mimosas, I came to the realization that I need to toughen up. I got frustrated a few weeks ago and that frustration just festered inside me until I realized I had become slightly complacent. It’s time to get serious about who I am as a businesswoman. I have set some incredibly lofty goals for myself and while I am well on my way to achieving them, I’m not going to become the superstar I want unless I toughen up. And that’s what we all want, right? To be superstars in our respective fields, whatever they may be. And if that isn’t our goal, we need to ask ourselves why? Why don’t you want to be the best of the best? What is holding us back from trying? And why aren’t we putting ourselves heart and soul into developing our talents?

It’s time to stop thinking of ourselves as just a college student, just an employee or just a…fill in the blank. What is your most secret, deepest desire and WANT? Don’t you dare give up on that lust. Grit your teeth and become obsessed with achieving your goal. It is almost expected as a 20-something girl that you will graduate college, enjoy some parties and make some good friends. What is NOT expected of us is to be single mindedly focused on becoming a businesswoman, on gaining as much knowledge of the world around you and becoming as successful as possible.

Let’s Get Obsessed With Becoming The Best

Let’s get obsessed. Let’s throw the stereotype of the ditzy girl who floats through life to the side and become consumed with becoming the best women we can be. The principles that guide businessmen and women can only aid us in our walk through life, even if we never have anything at all to do with “business.” Here are 4 ideas to help get you started!

·      Wake up early in the morning. Most successful businessmen (and millionaires) do. Work out. Actually, don’t work out. Destroy yourself. Push yourself. People who are in shape are perceived to be dedicated because staying fit is a commitment. Feed your body the healthiest food possible. Drink lots of water.

·      Always dress your best and present your best “you.” You never know WHERE you might meet a future business contact, employer, investor, lover, friend….who knows! Be ready to make a good impression on everyone you meet.

·      Set a daily goal that allows you to be working towards your dream, whatever that may be.

·      Read something every day that will lead to the edification of who you are as a person. Even if you’re insanely busy, read for at least 15-30 minutes before bed. I love fashion magazines as much as the next girl, but I’m talking real books, Doll. If you don’t know where to start, buy one of these, read it, apply it to your life and then move on to the next one!

Suggested Reading List

Excellence edited by J. Pincott
The Millionaire Next Door by Thomas J. Stanley and William D. Danko
The 4-Hour Workweek by Timothy Ferriss
The Bedside Baccalaureate edited by David Rubel
How To Win Friends & Influence People by Dale Carnegie

You can learn something from almost anyone and it doesn’t necessarily have to apply to your chosen field. Seek to be educated in all aspects of your life, and you won’t be able to help it, you will attract other educated and inspiring people to you like moths to a flame.

Girls Compete With Each Other, Women Uplift Each Other

We won’t get to the top unless we demand excellence from ourselves, and each other. I saw a quote the other day on Instagram and I instantly connected with it. It said “Girls compete with each other, women uplift each other.” It’s so true! So often we girls are more than willing to hate another girl on sight, just because we don’t know her. We have a tendency to be more willing to tear each other down than we are to lift each other up. Let’s quit the cycle together and be the change we want to see!

Encourage, befriend and help the women around you. Look for a woman you admire who has shown herself capable and ask her to mentor you. I don’t believe I would have achieved half the things I have in life if it wasn’t for the influence of some amazing mentors in my life. Look for younger girls around you who are interested in the same things you are, and be her big sister. Encourage her, be there for her and invest in her life.

We all have different gifts, strengths and weaknesses and when we band together and inspire one another to work harder, to aim higher and to never, ever give up, how can we fail?

I’m rooting for you, Doll!! Let’s toughen the heck up and become the very best we can be!

I Want It All

I Want It All. Not Even Kidding.
I want it all. Greedily, selfishly, hopelessly, romantically, I want it all.
Don’t you? You may be thinking, what in the HECK is she talking about now? But just respond instinctively….bear with me, ok?

Find Your Passion
Don’t you desire everything you want? The nameless, shapeless wants that are just a flashing picture and maybe a sound that reverberates deep within your bones…that ache that lets you know you’re alive and capable of dreams, of ambition and achieving it all? Well it happens to me, and if you don’t have those wants then you should start looking until you find something that ignites within you that passion.

I believe each one of us is given a specific talent or gift. What a shame to not squeeze every last DROP out of that talent that we can and turn ourselves into the most dazzling, the very best version of us that we can be.

In order to achieve those wants, I believe we have to make specific plans….and then work our asses off!

How To Get What You Want
What are you doing, thinking and planning this fall that is different than years past? A month can seem light years away to me, and then I look up and two years have gone by and my lifestyle and habits are stuck in the same rut as they were before.

My fix for this is two part: clearly defined goals and calling myself, even if I only whisper, by the name of what I want to be one day.

The First Part
Goals are just stepping-stones to making your dreams come true and because of this, goals are incredibly important to me, as they should be to you.
If you have a vague idea of the type of person you hope to be some day and dream about the far flung fancies you might accomplish, but you have no goals, you’ll waste an awful lot of time and energy flaffing about and not getting much done.

*Flaffing….from the Greek meaning “to waste time”. Flaffing is directly related to the word “floundering” in meaning.

If you don’t have clearly defined goals, my advice to you would be, get your rear in gear sister and write out everything you can think of that you hope to accomplish in life. By everything, I mean everything. Emotional characteristics, physical attributes, business hopes, recreational outlets, financial goals….write everything down. For example, your list might look something like this at first:

·      I want to be able to do a handstand
·      I want to have a zillion dollars in savings
·      I want to loose 5lbs
·      I want to give “x” amount of money to (whatever cause/charity)
·      I want to be able to leap tall buildings in a single bound and rule the world

Hahaha just checking to see if you were paying attention!!! But seriously, once you have all the random things that you want to accomplish one day, it’s time to organize them into sections. I have mine organized into Financial, Spiritual, Career/Personal, Health and Physical sections.

After everything is organized according to category, I make monthly goals that will bring me closer to all the main goals up on top. At the end of each month I update my monthly goals. My goals for October looked like this:

Liz’s October Short Term Goals, 2012
·      Put away $200 dollars in saving account for emergency fund goal of $1000 by the end of December.
·      Start running again 2 or 3 times a week. Build up to ride bike for an hour at a time.
·      Maintain study habits that will get you an A in class. Read more of textbook every day.
·      Keep working on pushups! Goal of 30 at a time by the end of the month!
·      Learn last two songs in Suzuki piano book
·      Read Adobe (five pages every night) and work on it by yourself until you can afford lesson.
·      Shoot twice a week.
·      Start meditating for five minutes in the morning.
·      Write grandparents letters 3 or 4 times this month.
·      Wear sunscreen every day!!!!
·      Becoming educated is the goal! Keep working and continuously push yourself!
Tonight I’ll go through everything, reevaluate where I am and make new goals for the month of November so that I’m continuously growing and pushing myself. Yours of course will look different and everyone has different things that they’re focused on or that mean more to them at different times in their life. The important thing is to at least WRITE THEM DOWN. In high school I had my goals written out on a sheet of paper that was taped my closet door where I could see it and read over my goals every day. Now days I’m on my computer all the time for school and writing, so I have a folder titled “Goals” and I keep them in a word document. I read them over at least once every day and seeing how my goals have evolved through the months inspires me to try harder.

The Second Part
The second part, and what I believe goes hand in hand with goals, is to start calling yourself by the name of what you want to be. If you do that, you can’t help but start acting and thinking like it.
For example, I want to be a runner. I hope to run at least 15 miles a week one day and one day I want to run a marathon. My “run” at the moment is actually better described as a fast jog. So far, I can run 2 miles at a time and I run about 4 times a week and uh… it’s not pretty. But I believe that calling myself a runner will help me get into the mindset of a runner. If I take myself seriously, how can I not succeed? And if you take yourself seriously, other people around you don’t have any option but to take you seriously as well.

So if you want to be an actress, you should think of yourself as an actress and call yourself an actress, even if you only whisper it while you’re washing your hair in the shower. If you want to be an incredible cook but you’re only capable of boiling water, start thinking of yourself as a cook! Use the term over and over and see what happens. Bet you start acting, thinking and cooking like a cook!

Putting It All Together
So go ahead…get greedy (In the good sense! Not the materialistic sense!), and want it all. You have the tools and skills to make your, hopes, dreams, wants and desires come true. Maybe the dream you have, floating around in the back of your mind scares you because you COULD accomplish it. And if you’re capable of achieving that goal, what’s to stop you from achieving anything you set your mind to? There is safety in the known, the ordinary and sometimes that holds us back, keeps us from going after the unknown and the frightening. And the thought of us being extraordinary can be a little terrifying.

Find your passion.
Listen to your desires.
Make your goals.
Think of yourself as that person.
Conquer the world.

Go get ‘em tiger.
